Greetings Flintridge Preparatory School Alumni!

May flowers are blooming on campus despite the lack of April showers. The weather here has added a little bit of “spring” to everyone’s step.  We are nearing the home stretch and are gearing up for the end of the school year.  While we are looking forward to all year-end activities in June, we hope to have these without the gloom.  In the meantime, please read on for the latest news from Prep…

Support Prep
It’s hard to believe, but the academic year is quickly coming to a close.  The school’s fiscal year will close on June 30th as will this year’s Annual Fund campaign.  We are delighted that alumni participation in the Annual Fund has been on the rise and if you have not yet participated, we hope we can count on you this year!  It’s easy to make a gift online or e-mail Donna Merchant, Director of Annual Giving, or call her at 818-949-5525.  For more information, visit Giving to Prep. Ramses Barden ’04 makes Prep history as NFL Draft Pick

Cheers to Andrew!
may_09_enews_andrewEvery year over 500,000 people are diagnosed with liver cancer.  Andrew Torres ’98 was one of them.  In memory of Andrew, please join his classmates, Geoffrey Chandler, Noelle Ito, Matt Linder, Chris Mang, Elizabeth Parks, Steven Stauff, and sister, Rachel Torres ’02, for an evening of food, drinks, and fun on Thursday, May 28 at Remedy Lounge in Downtown L.A., owned by Jill Bigelow Morales ’94 and her husband, Gabriel.  Tickets may be purchased online.  All proceeds benefit the Huntington Medical Research Institutes’ cancer research.

Prep’s Leo Club Excels at Philanthropy
yi_mfpPrep’s Leo Club held its 4th Annual Mr. Flintridge Prep Contest on March 28.  Joseph Yi ’09 was crowned Mr. Flintridge Prep and Daniel Beldy ’09 was voted Mr. Congeniality.  This fun event raised approximately $3,000 for Junior Blind of America.  Leo Club’s City of Hope Blood Drive on April 14 was also very successful.  Prep participants donated 38 pints of blood!  Thank you to everyone who participated and/or attended these events!  Read on for more information about the Leo Club and their dedication to Philanthropy… 
 
Grandparents’ Day
Grandparents were treated to a day in the life of their grandchildren on April 17 at Prep’s Annual Grandparents’ Day. The event was well attended by grandparents who live locally as well as those who traveled from as far as Ohio, Texas, and Colorado.  Read more… 

Prep's ACL achieves community outreach at Special Olympics
205_conof_joelFlintridge Prep’s ACL (Athletic Council on Leadership) spent the day fulfilling one aspect of the group’s mission – to extend the work, influence and engagement of Prep’s athletic programs and athletes into the broader community by volunteering at the Special Olympics.  Read more… 

Dennis Prager, well-known radio talk-show host delivers speech on the topic of Happiness.
Well-known radio talk-show host Dennis Prager came to campus on April 7 and delivered a speech on the topic of Happiness. Sponsored by the Prep Republican Club, Mr. Prager came early to engage with club members in the Alumni House before addressing the upper school community in Norris Auditorium.  Read more… 

Prep Summer School
Flintridge Prep's 2009 Summer Session offers options in academics, athletics, and the arts for students entering grades six through twelve. We welcome students from other schools as well as Flintridge Prep students.  Classes begin on Monday, June 22.  Course offerings, dates, and registration may be found online.  For more information please contact Scott Myers.

Class of 2009 Commencement
Graduation for the Class of 2009 will take place on Sunday, June 7, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.

Comedy Sportz
Congratulations to Prep’s Comedy Sportz High School League Team for winning the Southern California High School Tournament on April 18.  The team was represented by juniors Keenan Buchanan, Jeff DeFond, Dyllan Fernandez, and Charlie Kennedy.  Flintridge Prep’s team will now have a chance to compete against Comedy Sportz College Teams in May and June, and will be featured in the Comedy Sportz 20th Anniversary Show in Hollywood.

The joint 50th Reunion for classes 1959 and 1960 is scheduled for October 10, 2009.  Details to come!

Volunteers Wanted!
Reunion Volunteers are wanted to help plan our upcoming events.  If your class is approaching a milestone (5-, 10-, 15-, 20-year, etc.) reunion and you wish to participate in its planning, please let us know.  Phone-a-thon Volunteers are also needed to call classmates on specific evenings each October.  This is a fun way to catch up with fellow alums and help your alma mater in the process.  If you are interested in these volunteer opportunities, please email Jacqueline Epley, Director of Alumni Relations, or call the Office of Alumni Relations (818) 949-5526.
