ENGLISH

Active English for Middle School

Five weeks

This course prepares students entering 6th or 7th grade for the verbal portion of the ISEE and fosters success in middle school composition and literature. Through cooperative learning, educational games, focused discussion and instruction, students develop skills in reading comprehension and written expression.  Students read one novel and various short stories as an introduction to literature.

Preparation for High School English

Five weeks

In this course students entering 8th or 9th grade learn both analytical and creative writing, emphasizing clear thesis development, evidence, and commentary. Creative writing builds fluidity, vocabulary and voice. Students study several literary works, both for enjoyment and to refine critical thinking.

Expository Writing for Middle School

Two weeks

middle school students get an intensive workout in the fundamentals of expository writing, with particular attention to thesis statements, paragraph development, economy, consistent syntax, and coherence. Models, group work and individual assignments build core skills in analytical and persuasive writing. Enrollment limited to 15 students.

Creative Expression

Five weeks

Through readings, group discussions, and hands-on projects, students interpret several forms of creative expression including poetry, film, art, music, sport, dance, body art, and photography.  Each week we identify and discuss a different form of creative expression and produce a “piece” based on the form of expression discussed; the course culminates in a final project of free expression presented in a performance.

Writing for Entertainment

Three weeks

This course introduces scriptwriting through dynamic, hands-on projects, emphasizing basic elements of dramatic writing. Groups write and shoot a short original script, a song or advertisement, and an adaptation of a story.

Creative Writing for Middle School

Three weeks

middle school students explore a wide range of genres and techniques through writing and reading, finding their voices through collaboration in large and small groups, one-on-one sessions with the teacher, and individual projects. Students read texts as writers, studying narrative voice, character development, and natural dialogue. Students produce a little of everything: poetry, fiction, personal writing, non-fiction, and script writing.

HISTORY

The World’s Greatest Rebels

Three weeks

Students explore several of the most influential thinkers in intellectual history, individuals who rejected the prevailing values, conventions, beliefs, or institutions of their day. These figures were marginalized, rejected, or even killed by their respective power structures, but not before they irreversibly changed our ways of looking at human existence.

Discovering Los Angeles

Two weeks

Angelenos are notorious for deriding or denying the history of Los Angeles. This dynamic seminar spends the first week exploring this history—reading literature excerpts, analyzing images, and watching short cuts from films. During the second week the class visits many of the places we have discussed. Some potential field trips include a walking tour of downtown LA, a hike through Griffith Park, and a visit to the Gamble and Lummis Houses.

WORLD LANGUAGES

Spanish Review Workshop

Three weeks

This immersion course for students with prior experience in Spanish strengthens fundamental skills in preparation for Spanish 2. Students build fluency in the structures and vocabulary normally presented in the first year of high school Spanish, and develop proficiency in the four areas of language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Beginning Conversational Spanish

Two weeks

Designed for students with little to no experience in Spanish, this non-credit course stresses personal development in Spanish—and fun. It focuses on conversation, movement, conversation, story-creating and activities, presenting grammar only as it “pops up,” as a tool for comprehension.

MATHEMATICS

Introductory Pre-Algebra

Five weeks

Designed for students entering 6th through 8th grades, this fast-paced course gives students a head start on pre-algebra. Students review such basics as fractions, integers, decimals, and percentages. This course covers basic algebraic symbols and operations, manipulating variables and simple geometry, equation solving, and other topics.

Equivalent to a full year's course, this course stresses the properties of a number field, linear relations, radicals and the quadratic formula. Students receive a balanced emphasis, learning fundamental concepts and basic theory, as well as manipulation of algebraic expressions.  May be taken for review, remediation, or acceleration.

Geometry

Six weeks

Equivalent to a full year's course, this course introduces logic in presenting Euclidean plane geometry. Topics include parallel lines, congruence, similarity, logical proofs, areas of polygons and circles, volumes of solids, transformations, arcs, and segments in circles. May be taken for review, remediation, or acceleration.

Algebra II with Trigonometry

Six weeks

Equivalent to a full year's course, this course extends to a more advanced level the material covered in Algebra 1 through ordered field properties, inequalities, rational number systems, complex number systems, radicals, exponents and logarithms, systems of quadratics, trigonometric graphs, matrices and conic sections. The course stresses word problems and algebraic modeling. Graphing calculators are required. May be taken for review or acceleration.

PREP SAT INSTITUTE

Two-Week Intensive Preparation and Review

Flintridge Prep Mathematics Department chairman John Romano, a test writer for the Educational Testing Service of the College Board, offers rare insight into the makeup and strategies behind the SAT. Veteran Prep English teacher Patrick Ferry, an experienced SAT instructor, leads the verbal sessions, with attention to both the critical reading and writing skills sections. Students need not enroll in both sessions.

Credit for Visual Arts classes: Flintridge Prep students entering grades 10 through 12 may earn one full credit for summer school art, only if enrolled in two sections of the same five-week class. Non-Flintridge students should arrange credit for Prep summer session courses beforehand. 

Drawing and Painting

This relaxed and enjoyable class explores a variety of painting and drawing materials and subjects. Students learn at their own pace and have the option of working indoors or outdoors. All materials provided; bring your iPod!

Advanced Drawing and Painting

Get a head start on senior year, develop your AP portfolio, or just work on advancing your drawing and painting skills. Prerequisite: one year of drawing and painting.

Figure Drawing

Five weeks

This course introduces figure drawing. Its objective is to familiarize the student with “seeing”; that is, analyzing gesture, weight, and the fundamentals of anatomy and then interpreting them through line, value and media experimentation. These basics provide a jumping off point for the student to realize the potential of the figure in his/her artwork.

Beginning Photography

Five weeks

Students with little or no photographic experience receive a hands-on exploration of the processes and the ideas behind photography as a form of creative expression. Students practice both digital and darkroom techniques, express their ideas visually, and expand their understanding of the medium and its influence on culture. Students must furnish their own 35mm camera.

Advanced Photography

Five weeks

This course expands the technical skills and creative dialogue introduced during the basic photography course. Students learn advanced techniques in both the darkroom and digital environments and then apply them to assigned projects. Emphasis shifts to self-directed creative exploration and regular discussions about trends in contemporary image making. After a brief review of black-and-white wet darkroom procedures and techniques, students concentrate on using the “dry darkroom” with Photoshop CS5. Students must furnish their own 35mm camera.

Ceramics

Five weeks

Using their hands and simple tools, students with little or no ceramics experience learn the basics of handbuilding: pinch-pot, soft slab, coil and leather-hard construction, using the potter’s wheel to create simple shapes that can be conjoined into more complex shapes. Students explore surface decoration, design and construction of mosaic, and small-scale sculpture. This course emphasizes craftsmanship and 3D design. Students with previous experience may choose to concentrate on one particular area of construction and decoration.

PERFORMING ARTS

Fundamentals of Music Composition

Four weeks

Intermediate and advanced-level student musicians learn the building blocks and processes of music composition, examining melodic writing, the combining of melodic lines, tonal harmony, and musical form, as well as contemporary compositional techniques.  Prerequisite:  Students should have at least one year of study on a musical instrument or in voice and be fluent reading in at least one clef.

Acting Workshop for Middle School

Three weeks

Students entering grades 6th through eight learn and strengthen acting fundamentals.  Actors develop their instrument through vocal technique and movement exercises, ensemble building, approaching scene work and/or monologues, improvisation, creating a character, and more; course material may shift depending on enrollment.   Students tackle the essentials of actor technique via communal strengthening and individual-specific feedback.  The course culminates in a performance. Enrollment is limited.

Theater Intensive

Five weeks

Designed for students entering grades ten through twelve, this component-structured intensive examines technique and application in several areas, emphasizing a highly physical, hands-on approach to fine-tune and enhance the actor's instrument and versatility.  Components may include mask work, the actor's workout, viewpoints, stage combat, voice and speech training, accents and dialects, Laban, performance art, approaching Shakespeare, dance/movement as extension, Commedia dell'arte, makeup application, and more.  Classes consist of one or two components; curriculum may shift depending on enrollment.  The course culminates in a performance. Enrollment is limited.

Clowning Intensive

Five weeks

Students entering grades ten through twelve, along with just-graduated seniors, discover in this intensive their own unique clown, a singular character that lives inside each individual. Through clowning, they learn about physical comedy, timing, and the structure of creating bits. The course culminates in an entirely original performance, open to the public and featuring the student's newly created characters.

Cooking for Real

Two weeks

This hands-on course kicks off with kitchen safety, using the stove, the oven, and the food processor, culminating in the preparation of an international selection of foods including sushi, fresh pasta, and handmade ravioli. This class is recommended for food lovers of all ages, but is limited to 15 students.

Adobe Flash for Beginners

Two weeks

If you’ve ever been interested in making your own cartoons or games, or if you just want to make a webpage a little more exciting, Flash is the place to start; Flash is the web standard for animation and interactivity . No materials are required, although a personal USB drive is recommended.  This class uses the PC (Windows) platform, but the instructor (and the program) is Mac-friendly.

Designed for students entering 9th grade, these one-week workshops target the fundamentals of specific disciplines. Rather than elementary study habits and personal organization, these bootcamps focus on concrete resources and habits of mind to bring students’ academic performance in sync with their ability.  Students may enroll in any combination of these courses. Enrollment is limited; Flintridge Prep students will receive priority.

Flintridge Shootout Basketball Camps

Prep boys’ varsity basketball coach Garrett Ohara leads these clinics, emphasizing both offensive and defensive fundamentals. Coach Ohara highlights team concepts, discipline, and hard work through exercises, drills, and games. Camps are open to boys and girls entering grades 4-9.  Each player receives a T-shirt.

Professor Lu's Volleyball Clinic

Professor Lian-Kang Lu conducts his annual volleyball clinic.  One of the world’s most technically knowledgeable clinicians, Lu coached the Chinese women's team in the 1984 Olympics; more recently he served as head coach at Cal State Northridge.  The clinic is open to girls and boys entering grades 6 through 12. Each player receives a clinic T-shirt.
