Doane M Lowery Sepia Boatman
The Doane M. Lowery Society, created in 2005, recognizes those in the Prep community who remember Prep in their estate plans. The Boatmans are founding members of the Lowery Society.

Ruth and Jack Boatman

Ruth and Jack Boatman have had a fondness for Flintridge Prep ever since their son, Mark, enrolled in the school 33 years ago. The Boatmans’ affection for Prep is what led them to create a Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (CRAT) agreement naming the school as the beneficiary of the trust. In addition to benefiting from a significant tax deduction the year they signed the agreement, the Boatmans’ CRAT is providing them with a fixed amount of income each year.

After entering Flintridge Prep in the 4th grade and graduating in 1984, Mark Boatman went on to UC San Diego and then medical school at USC. He became an emergency room doctor and practiced some years before leaving the profession to take over the family business.

Although they haven’t slowed down much, Ruth and Jack enjoy being retired and catching up on their reading—she likes mysteries and he likes books on history and the Wall Street Journal. In fact, it was reading which led them to think about signing up for an annuity with Flintridge Prep.

Ruth read a brochure about CRATs from her alma mater in Pennsylvania, but the university declined her offer to set up a CRAT because it is not licensed to establish annuities in California. She then decided to sign up with an organization closer to home — Flintridge Prep. Ruth feels the CRAT was “well worth it, it’s been very good; it was a good experience for a good cause.”

Individuals who take the step to include Flintridge Prep in their estate plans and notify the school will be honored as members of the Lowery Society. For more information please contact the Director of Development.
