“Success in sports is measured not by wins and losses, but by the growth and development of the team and its individuals achieved through commitment, respect, sacrifice, sportsmanship, and the pure joy of athletic involvement.”

Athletics at Flintridge Prep

The Upper School

Athletics holds a long and valued place in Flintridge Prep’s history. Athletic programs were started within the first few years of the school’s inception in the 1930s. Today, the interscholastic sports programs at Prep seek to honor that tradition and fulfill the stated mission of Flintridge Prep. The athletic department and each of its coaches strive to provide a rigorous, moral and intimate environment for all student-athletes to learn, grow and succeed according to their unique interests and abilities.

All the athletic teams at Prep pursue competitive success, but that success is not measured simply by wins and losses. It is measured by the team and each individual’s growth and development achieved through cooperative discipline and sacrifice, physical and mental challenge, and the commitment to shared goals pursued in harmony with principles of respect, honor, sportsmanship, and the pure joy of athletic involvement. Through athletic involvement, student-athletes are encouraged to pursue personal growth and development as a life-long habit, developing skills in leadership and teamwork, self-discipline and the ability to persevere in the face of challenge and struggle.

Flintridge Prep seeks to offer programs and opportunities for all students – upper school and middle school, male and female. No program is viewed as more important than another.

The Middle School

The emphasis of middle school athletics at Flintridge Prep is participation. Our middle school athletic programs encourage involvement and interaction in vigorous exercise, the development of an awareness of personal interests and talents, and experimentation in diverse athletic activities by as many students as possible. Through such participatory athletics, students continue to develop socially, physically and emotionally. Through the simple pleasure of physical activity, combined with the structure of a team sport and the leadership of a coach, students continue their development, acquiring skills, values, and knowledge that will benefit them as they get older.

The emphasis in middle school sports is not competitiveness defined by wins or losses. Competitive success, however, need not be inconsistent with the goals of the middle school program, and is welcomed so long as it remains a consequence of the program and not the motivating objective.
