Active English for Middle School
Five weeks
Designed for students entering 6th or 7th grade, this course prepares students for the verbal portion of the ISEE and fosters success in middle-school composition and literature. Through cooperative learning, educational games, focused discussion and instruction, students sharpen their skills in reading comprehension and written expression.  Students read one novel and various short stories as an introduction to literature.

Preparation for High School English 
Five weeks 
For students entering eighth or ninth grade, this course features both analytical and creative writing. In analytical writing we emphasize clear thesis development and evidence; most high school papers rely on the clarity and precision of a well-crafted thesis and the evidence that supports it. In creative writing we emphasize the pure enjoyment of writing, along with building vocabulary and integrating one’s voice into writing. The class includes intensive literary analysis, but our main emphasis is on composition.

Expository Writing Workshop

Designed for middle-school students, this course provides an intensive workout in the fundamentals of expository writing, with particular attention to effective thesis statements, paragraph development, economy, consistent syntax, and coherence. Models, group work and individual assignments build core skills in analytical and persuasive writing.

Etymologies 
Three weeks
This course explores how two “dead” languages, Latin and ancient Greek, are a vibrant and dynamic presence in the ongoing development of the English language. Students learn Latin and Greek prefixes, bases and suffixes. Equipped with this basic knowledge, they explore the evolution of language, studying excerpts from Shakespeare, Lewis Carroll, and Joyce. Through brief lectures, readings, exercises, and creative projects, students increase their vocabularies and reading comprehension, gain a more nuanced understanding of language, and build a strong foundation for learning languages. No prior knowledge of Greek or Latin is assumed.

Creative Writing Workshop 
Three weeks
Middle-school students explore a wide range of genres and techniques through both writing and reading, finding their own voices through collaboration in large and small groups, one-on-one sessions with the teacher, and individual projects. Students read texts as writers, studying narrative voice, character development, and natural dialogue. Students produce a little of everything: poetry, fiction, personal writing, non-fiction, and script writing.

This hands-on course kicks off with kitchen safety, using the stove, the oven, and the food processor, and culminates in the preparation of a worldwide selection of foods including fresh pasta & handmade ravioli. Students who have been recommended for Honors Biology at Prep find this course helpful in reviewing organic chemistry and biochemistry. This refresher provides a leisurely look at the last portion of ninth-grade Chemical Science and highlights those aspects of the subject needed for Biology.

Flintridge Prep Mathematics Department chairman John Romano, a test writer for the Educational Testing Service of the College Board, offers rare insight into the makeup and strategies behind the SAT. Beginning Photography
Five weeks
This is a course for students with little or no darkroom experience; using a 35mm camera (SLR/point & shoot), students learn the basics of black-and-white photography. Students cover mastery of the camera, processing negatives, and printing in the darkroom. This course stresses technique and composition. Near the end of the class we will also discuss digital photography and the “dry darkroom,” using computers, scanners, and digital photo printers. Students should have use of a 35mm camera.

Advanced Photography
Five weeks
After a brief review of black-and-white wet darkroom procedures and techniques, students concentrate on using the “dry darkroom” with Photoshop CS2 to print film and digital images.  Students use our scanners to load up film, negative, and positive images. We will also use our card readers to upload digital images. This course uses basic photoshop skills; students with a good understanding of photoshop progress at their own pace. Students who choose to do so may concentrate on wet darkroom techniques, printing large images and archetypal images.

Have fun and express yourself while learning about digital photography. Through a series of creative projects, students explore the use of digital cameras and manipulate images with Adobe Photoshop. Adobe Flash for Beginners
Two weeks
This three-week course provides novice Flash users with the tools to create their own animations using Adobe’s Flash animation software.  Learn how to make keyframe animations, buttons, scripted actions and more.  Flash is the web standard for animation and interactivity.  If you’ve ever been interested in making your own cartoons or games, or if you just want to make a webpage a little more exciting, Flash is where to start.  No materials are required, although a personal USB drive is recommended.  This class will be taught on the PC (Windows) platform, but the instructor (and the program) is Mac-friendly.  Class is intended for absolute beginners with limited or no Flash experience, but savvier users are welcome as well if they would like the time to work on an existing project.

Flintridge Shootout Basketball Camps

Professor Lu's Volleyball Clinic
Professor Lian-Kang Lu conducts his annual volleyball clinic.  One of the world’s most technically knowledgeable clinicians, Lu coached the Chinese women's team in the 1984 Olympics; more recently he retired as head coach at Cal State Northridge.  The clinic is open to girls and boys entering grades 6 through 12. Elite Soccer Camp
Led by Prep head soccer coach Esteban Chavez, this six-week camp is for the player who wants to compete at a high level in his or her high school career and beyond. The twelve two-hour sessions cover technique under pressure, tactics, and physical and mental toughness. The camp covers a variety of offensive and defensive topics. Current collegiate players from Division 1 (USC, San Luis Obispo, CSUF, Yale) and Division 2 (CSULA, UCSD, CSUSM, CPU) will demonstrate skills and answer questions.

Youth Football
Prep Coach Antonio Harrison leads this camp for boys and girls, emphasizing, in a caring and supportive atmosphere, the fundamentals of football and sportsmanship, along with the importance of goal setting and perseverance. Each day is filled with football activities for campers of all ages who wish to improve their skills and their knowledge of football. The camp is divided by age and ability, with each camper receiving individualized instruction. Campers will put their skills into practice during daily flag football games.

Introduction to Weightlifting
This beginning course, for boys and girls unfamiliar with weightlifting, introduces proper technique through individualized instruction. This basic course applies fundamental principles in developing a foundation of body strength and muscle tone, either as an end in itself or as a preparation for specialization. Students pursue specific, individualized goals, considering the basics of physiology, biomechanics, size, and endurance.

Advanced Strength and Conditioning
This program for boys and girls offers in-depth instruction in weightlifting, stressing strength, weight gain, and flexibility for injury prevention and agility. Students learn training principles that will impact a lifetime of physical fitness, offering improved health, stress reduction, and enhanced quality of life. This course employs training methods including free weights, stationary bicycle, plyometrics, sprint work, and running in order to improve athletic ability and all-around strength.
