Flintridge Preparatory School is a nonprofit, independent college preparatory day school for grades 7-12. Founded in 1933, it is located within the city limits of La Cañada Flintridge, California, at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Facilities

  • School facilities include a science/cultural center, three classroom buildings, a computer laboratory, a new technology-based library and learning center, a performing arts center, a 400-seat auditorium, an administration building with faculty offices, and an alumni and development office building.
  • The new library and learning center, completed in the fall of 2007, is a two-story complex which houses a computer lab, a classroom for seminars, meeting rooms, space for individual and group study, and a college counseling suite.
  • The food service facility, also expanded and modernized in 2007, is a full service kitchen offering nutritious meals throughout the day.
  • Athletic facilities include a full-size gymnasium, a six-lane swimming and diving pool, a large multi-sport playing field, a fully equipped weight training facility and a professional training room for injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Accreditation

  • Flintridge Prep is accredited by, and is a charter member of, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It holds memberships in the California Association of Independent Schools, the National Association of Independent Schools, the Western Association of College Counselors, the Cum Laude Society, and the Educational Records Bureau. Flintridge complies with the National Association for College Admission Counseling's Statement of Principles of Good Practice. It also participates in the American Field Service and The Independent School Alliance for Minority Affairs.

Admission and Enrollment

  • Approximately 500 students in grades 7 through 12. The senior class consists of approximately 100 students. Admission is selective.

Ethnic Composition

  • 53% Caucasian; 28% Asian-American; 7% African-American; 7% Hispanic; 5% Other Backgrounds.

Faculty

  • 65 full-time faculty; 2 part-time faculty. All have B.A./A.B./B.S. degrees; 43 have master's degrees and 5 have doctoral degrees.

Grades/Rank

  • Semester system, four grading periods per year with grades recorded at the end of each course. A year course yields 1 unit in that subject. Students normally take 5 units each year. Class periods are 43 minutes long and meet 5 times per week. Physical education is required through the junior year.
  • Students are not ranked. G.P.A. is based on all course work except physical education. Grading consists of A = excellent; B = good; C = adequate; D = serious difficulty; and F = unwilling to make an effort to progress. While a D is a passing grade, colleges recognize only grades of C- or above.

Graduation Requirements

  • Students must complete 4 units of English, 3 of math, 3 of foreign language, 3 of history, 2 of lab science, and 2 of fine arts. Community service is required at each grade level.
