Girls’ Water Polo Triumphs against Westridge 14-11

In a contest that pitted Arin Phillips ’14 against her sister Haley, the Rebels took down the Tigers at home Friday with a combination of crushing offense and strong defense. In the first quarter, Suzanna Tan ’12 led the way with 6 points and Katarina Boyd ’12 scored 2 points to give the Rebels an early 8-2 lead.

In the second quarter, goalie Sarah Yoho ’14 preserved the Rebels’ advantage with numerous saves, holding the Tigers to just one point. Kate Woolley ’12 landed 4 more points to put the Rebels up 12-3 at halftime. Despite the grueling effort, the Rebels went toe to toe with the Tigers in the third quarter as each team scored 2 more points. The Tigers mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter while the Rebels rested their starters, but it wasn’t enough for them to take the lead. With their greatest number of wins in 6 years, the Rebels overall record is now 4-5-0 (2-5-0 in league).

Boys’ Soccer Beats Webb 5-1

A fantastic away win earned at Webb! The Rebels had a powerful second half display, rounding off a solid first half showing. Goals by Zaid Al-Marayati ’12 and Henry Griffith ’14 were split by a Webb equalizer. The Rebels were ahead a 2-1 going into the second half. The boys showed fantastic team effort, with two more goals from Manuel Perez ’13 and a second from Henry Griffith ’14. The whole team showed strong defensive play, and the result was a resounding 5-1 victory. Prep’s league record is now 3-1.

Girls’ Soccer Beats Chadwick 1-0

Samantha Davies ’13 scored on a pass from Kaelin King ’13 in the 16th minute, and the Prep defense held Chadwick scoreless for the rest of the game for a Prep 1-0 win. Casey Cousineau ’13 recorded her 9th shut-out in 13 games for the Rebels, who moved past Chadwick into 2nd place in the Prep League behind Poly. Prep’s overall record is 10-2-1 (4-1-0 in league).

Boys’ Basketball Knocks Down Poly 51-34

The Rebels were greeted enthusiastically at home Friday during their highly anticipated contest with cross town rival, the Poly Panthers. After four quarters of high energy basketball, the Rebels were victorious, much to the delight of fans who packed the gym wall to wall. The Rebels were merciless and outscored the Panthers in all four quarters. Kory Hamane ’12 led the Rebels offensively with 18 points followed by Robert Cartwright ’14 with 13 points and Chad Cosse ’13 with 10 points. Steven Fleming ’12 stacked up 4 blocked shots while Kareem Ismail ’13 made 3 blocks and Jedrick Eugenio ’12 made 2 blocks in a stifling Rebels defense that held the Panthers to single digits for the first three quarters.

Prep followed up the win against Poly with a close 65-59 loss against the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers (12-9) in a nightcap of the War on the Floor games at Taft High School Jan. 21. While a 3-point shot from Eugenio gave the Rebels a 55-54 lead with 3 minutes left to play, opponent Jahmal Taylor scored 8 points in the final two minutes to ensure a Trailblazers victory. Cosse had a splendid night with a career best 21 points and 12 rebounds while Cartwright scored 14 points and Hamane scored 11 points. This game takes Prep’s overall record to 11-7(4-0 in league).
