ACL Hosts Robinson-Young Family in Special Assembly
Posted 03/30/2017 03:48PM

Kathy Robinson-Young, the daughter of Olympic athlete Mack Robinson and the niece of Jackie Robinson, spoke to students about the legacy and triumphs of her athletic family in an assembly organized by the ACL. She was joined by her mother, Mack Robinson’s widow, Delano, as well as her daughter, Brittni.

Mack Robinson was one of just 18 black athletes to compete in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, where he won a silver medal. Jackie Robinson broke the color line in baseball in 1947. Mack Robinson lived in Pasadena most of his life and was a strong advocate for service. He was also an early supporter of the Special Olympics and required his children to support and volunteer for the Special Olympics.

Kathy reminded students that they should take advantage of every opportunity and listen to the advice of the adults in their lives, noting the significance of her father’s prescience. “How could he have known I would one day have a special needs child?” Kathy’s daughter, Brittni, now 26, has been involved in the Special Olympics since she was 3.
