Parent and Alumni Summer Sessions

The Parent and Alumni Summer Sessions are back for a sixth year. These lively discussions and learning opportunities are open to alumni, parents and parents of alumni. Discover classes that your kids loved. Finally take a shortened version of that last class you could not fit into your senior schedule.

Great Books

What is the Good Life? Regardless of age, profession or other circumstances, the question applies to us all.  But who are we?  Predominantly a species of the head?  The heart?  Playthings of some pre-determined fate?  Or free people making significant choices?  On five evenings this summer, we will explore these questions.

We'll also attend a performance of Measure for Measure at the Griffith Park Shakespeare Festival (optional).

European Renaissance Art

This course will offer a brief introduction to the art of the Renaissance in Europe, beginning with the fourteenth-century masters Giotto and Duccio and continuing through the early and high Renaissance in Italy and in Northern Europe. Works of art will be interpreted in the context of social, economic, political, religious, and intellectual changes sweeping Europe at this time. We will also explore the long-term impact of the Renaissance in art and culture, considering the ways in which ideas born in the fifteenth century continue to impact the work of global contemporary artists.

Dates:
Wednesday evenings, June 21 - July 5 and Monday evening, July 10
Time:
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Instructor:
Mrs. Vanessa Walker-Oakes

Los Angeles History

This course covers pivotal moments in LA history in a series of five one-hour classes. In class one, we discuss Los Angeles as a Wild West town plagued by interracial violence during the city’s Americanization immediately after the Mexican American War. The second class delves into the construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in the early 20th century, which facilitated the city’s demographic explosion during the Roaring Twenties. In class three, we discuss how the streetcar system, in one of history’s contradictions, contributed to urban sprawl. The construction of Dodger Stadium and the rise of a postwar suburban culture in Los Angeles is the topic of class four. In our final class, we discuss the socio-political and economic reverberations of Los Angeles’s transition into the post-Cold War economy.

Dates:
Tuesday evenings, June 6 - June 27 and Wednesday evening, July 5
Time:
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
