Math Faculty & Assistant Makerspace Coordinator

Jessie Ricker

What would our community be surprised to find out about you?

A lot of people meet me and assume I am vegan.  I eat meat, but I am allergic to dairy. Also, I have a long list of book recommendations that I would love to share!

How do you spend your free time?

I really enjoy making objects and visiting thrift stores.   I like knitting, sewing, making costumes, building shelves, creating jewelry, and pop up cards!

In which teacher's class would you most like to enroll, even for a day?

Mr. Frost because I also love statistics!

What impact do you hope to have at Flintridge Prep?

I want to help students imagination come to life in the MakerSpace!  Want to make something cool?  I  want to help! Also, I want to be a support for students who find math challenging.  I like helping students build foundational knowledge of math and find the strategies that click.

What do you hope your students take away from your courses?

Math is more than just numbers!  Math class can give us opportunities to learn about our brain and the brains of others, and can make us better readers.  Math is a puzzle that can be pulled apart in many ways.

What is your greatest professional accomplishment?

It's not an accomplishment as much as a great memory!  I taught math and science in South Africa for a few months and my classes had some of the most joyful discussions.  The classes were for students between 15 and 22 years and they were just so kind to each other.  They really wanted everyone in the class to succeed.

Anything else you'd like to share about your experience at Flintridge Prep?

This is my first year and it is just so lovely to be here!  I've really enjoyed how welcoming students and teachers have been.
