Recent Communications from Prep

October 20, 2020

Dear Community Member,

We appreciate the support that parents have given to our faculty, staff, and students as we continue to focus on providing the best possible student experience this fall. Currently, Los Angeles County’s COVID-19 adjusted case rate remains at levels that keep the county in Tier 1, the state’s most restrictive tier. As a result of the increasing case rates, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s conservative approach to reopening schools, and the approaching Thanksgiving and winter holidays, we do not see an encouraging outlook for our return to campus before at least January 2021 for any in-person learning. While we are disappointed with this situation, the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and families remains our primary concern. We will continue to monitor the data and provide frequent updates.

We recognize that managing health and safety for all means also providing essential social and emotional support. Our teachers have been focusing on such support in classes and extracurricular activities, and our Student Life team recently held retreats and activities designed to connect students. In addition, yesterday marked a milestone, as some 200 high school athletes returned to campus for sports conditioning for the first time since the spring. The protocols put into place for this program follow LA County guidelines and are designed to minimize risk for students, coaches, and their families. Athletes will be masked, must complete a daily symptom tracker, will train outside and for no more than 50 minutes per session, and will remain in stable cohorts of 12 every time they come to campus.

Prep will continue to explore ways to nurture social and emotional connection. We take our obligation to follow the County mandates very seriously, and it is an essential part of Prep’s values to promote personal responsibility in the face of even the most challenging circumstances. Together, as a community, we will get through this. We will adhere to strict health and safety guidelines every step of the way, and we invite all community members to visit our Return to Campus Plan webpage for more information on campus plans. Additionally, community members are invited to email covidteam@flintridgeprep.org at any time.

My very best,

Jim Pickett
