Two Concerts, One Vision
Close up shot of members of the Flintridge Prep Jazz Band performing on stage

In celebrating cycles of renewal, rebirth, roots, and origins, the Winter Music Concert "Full Circle" and "I Feel the Earth Move: Roots of Rhythm & Blues" provided an array of vocal, orchestral, jazz, and rock arrangements. The December 13 concert brought together musicians of all levels in a Vocal and Instrumental Concert at 2 p.m. and a Jazz and Rock Ensemble Concert at 7 p.m.

The afternoon program explored the full-circle theme through works ranging from toxic love cycles in Laufey's "From the Start" to coming-of-age reflections in Frank Ocean's "Pink + White" and mythological resurrection in Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus." The orchestra presented works including Gustav Holst's "The Planets" and "You'll Be Back" from Hamilton. As a finale, approximately 70 orchestra and choir students performed the "Hallelujah Chorus" together—a rare showcase of the program's full scope on the same stage.

Featured soloists included Gabriel S. '27 on piano with the Community Orchestra and a chamber trio featuring Sam C. '26, Daniel E. '26, and Zachary T. '26, which the three rehearsed for six months.

The evening Jazz Concert paid homage to the roots of American popular music, with works ranging from "When the Saints Go Marching In" to Alicia Keys. This year's ensembles featured violin students, bringing fresh arrangements to classics like "Linus & Lucy" and expanding the traditional jazz sound.
