The Flintridge Prep fall sports season is just getting underway, with several home volleyball, water polo, and tennis games this week. The first home football game of the season this Friday, September 2 vs. Cate, and the boys cross country team will be participating in the Cool Breeze Invitational on Saturday, September 3. Check the Athletics Calendar for more information. This week we highlight the boys water polo team, which has had a stellar season start. 

Flintridge Prep Opener vs. Arcadia (14-11 win) 

On August 24, the Prep boys water polo team went head to head with a tough Arcadia HS team. After ending the third quarter tied 9-9, Flintridge Prep went on to make a 5 to 1 scoring run in the fourth quarter. Arcadia answered with an extra goal, finalizing the match with a Flintridge Prep victory 14-11. The team was led by #2 Noah Corral ’23 with five goals, #3 Michael Gamboa ’23, and #12 Charlie Simonian ’25 with three goals apiece, and by #1 John Bennett ’23 with 12 saves in the goal. 

Flintridge Prep at San Marino (10-8 Win) 

On August 25, the Wolves traveled to San Marino and left victorious after yet another battle. Prep and San Marino were even at the end of the first quarter, 3-3. The Wolves went up 7-3 with a strong second quarter. San Marino battled back to make it a 9-7 game at the end of the third quarter. Prep added a goal and only gave up one goal in the fourth, finishing victoriously 10-8. 

Pasadena Poly Tournament on August 26-27 

Round 1: Flintridge Prep vs. South Pasadena HS (13-2 Win) 

Prep started off the Poly Tournament vs. South Pasadena HS and went up early leading South Pasadena HS 6-1 at halftime and a dominant second half defeating South Pas 13-2. #2 Noah Corral ’23 had five goals; #3 Michael Gamboa ’23, #4 Ty Young ’23, #11 Aidan Grimm ’23, and #17 Ridley Tolleson ’25 had two goals apiece. #1 John Bennett ’23 had 10 saves as goalkeeper. 

Round 2: Flintridge Prep vs. John Burroughs HS (15-12 Win) 

In their second match of the day, Prep played a competitive Burroughs HS. FP came out on top 15-12. #2 Noah Corral ’23 led the team again with four goals. #4 Ty Young ’23 had a good game as well with three goals, as well as #6 Elliott Oakes ’25 with three goals.  

Round 3: Flintridge Prep vs. La Serna (12-3 Win) 

In order to secure a shot at the tournament title game, Prep needed to win this game. The Wolves did what they needed to do, coming out early to a 8-2 lead by the end of the first half. Prep went on to play stellar defense and closed the game out with a 12-3 win. #2 Noah Corral ’23 led the team with five goals, #10 Henry Brookbanks ’23 also had a great game with four goals, and #1 goalie John Bennett ’23 had 18 saves.  

Championship Game: Flintridge Prep vs. St. Francis (11-10 Win) 

The Wolves played a very competitive championship game against St. Francis HS. The team went down in the first quarter 2-5. Then they fought back in the second quarter making it a 6-8 game, down by two goals. Prep chipped away again in the third quarter, making it an 8-9 game, with St. Francis up by a goal. Prep had a great fourth quarter, scoring three goals to St. Francis’s one and coming out on top 11-10. #2 Noah Corral ’23 had three goals in the championship game and was named the Pasadena Poly Tournament MVP and All-Tournament Team. #10 Henry Brookbanks ’23 also had three goals and is a part of the Pasadena Poly All-Tournament team. The All-Tournament team is comprised of the seven most impactful athletes in the tournament.
