Affording Prep

We believe that finances should never be an obstacle to obtaining a great education, and we strive to offer all qualified student-applicants access to a Prep education. Financial assistance is granted based on demonstrated family financial need. We follow the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Principles of Good Practice for Financial Assistance Administration, including the determination for admission without regard to a student's application for financial assistance.

The NAIS benchmark for tuition assistance provided by independent schools is 20% to 25% of students receiving average grants of 50% tuition. Flintridge Prep currently meets the highest NAIS guideline, with 27% of students receiving assistance, with grants ranging from 8% to 100% of tuition. The average grant is approximately 58% of tuition.

Financial Assistance Procedure

Annually, the Board of Trustees sets the financial assistance budget. After need has been analyzed, a committee appointed by the head of school allocates resources to each applicant family.

The amount of the financial assistance award is based on demonstrated family need as determined by an analysis of the confidential financial information the family submits through FAST application. If applicable, non-custodial parents must also complete a FAST application. Though families are required to apply annually for financial assistance, it is almost always renewed by the Financial Assistance Committee.

All financial information and documents are kept in the strictest confidence. Our admissions committee is never aware of whether an applicant is applying for financial assistance, and our Financial Assistance Committee looks at financial assistance applications only after a decision has been made to admit a student to the school.

Please note that the application for financial assistance is a separate and second process in addition to the application for admission to Flintridge Prep. If your family is interested in applying for financial assistance, please complete the online ISM FAST financial assistance application, and to submit tax information by the deadlines noted.

Applying for Financial Assistance

Flintridge Prep offers an online application for applicants and re-enrolling students called Financial Assistance for School Tuition (FAST). The application usually doesn’t take longer than an hour to complete.

Final 2020 and 2021 federal and state tax returns are required to complete the financial assistance application. We understand that it may be difficult to provide final 2021 returns early in the calendar year, so drafts are acceptable until final copies can be submitted to FAST. If you are sending a 2021 draft, please include copies of all 1099s, W2s, and other 2021 tax documents to which you have access. Please upload or mail your 2020 federal and state tax returns, drafts or final, by Friday, February 4, 2022. If you choose to mail to FAST, the address is:

FAST Processing
1316 N. Union St.
Wilmington, DE 19806

Please do not send originals, fax, or email your tax information.

The fee to apply for financial assistance is $45; it is non-refundable, payable by MasterCard, Visa, or American Express and will show as a charge to Independent School Management. Please contact Kim Kinder, Director of Operations, at 818.949.5518 to request an ISM-FAST fee waiver.

If you are applying to other schools that also use FAST for financial assistance analysis, additional applications will cost $10. FAST will e-mail you a PIN and personalized link for additional applications. You must use the PIN and link to apply to each additional school at a reduced rate of $10. Please contact the FAST Call Center at 877.326.FAST (3278) if you need any assistance applying to multiple schools.

If you have additional questions about the financial assistance application process, see our Financial Assistance FAQs at the bottom of this page. If you have a question that you don’t see answered in our FAQs, please contact Kim Kinder, Director of Operations, at 818.949.5518.
