Just as it’s finally starting to feel like fall, the fall sports season is revving up for its final competitions of the year.
On Monday, boys varsity water polo beat Crescenta Valley High School with a final score of 11-10. Out to an early lead, the Wolves held an 11-6 lead at the start of the fourth quarter. The Falcons battled back to make it a one goal differential, but the Wolves were able to hold out for the win. Wolves’ key players included goalie #1 Dylan Mealey ’22 with 13 saves, and driver #6 Michael Gamboa ’23 with three goals and multiple steals. The win comes a few days after the Wolves defeated Poly, 8-6, and sets the team with a 10-8 overall record. Their next game is today against La Salle.
Last Saturday, the cross country teams competed at the Santa Clarita Invitational. The varsity girls squad finished second overall in the small school race, besting area opponent Mayfield by 11 points. Nicole Mirzaian ’22 ran a career-best 19:53 for a 10th place finish in the race and was trailed closely by Anya Rose ‘23 (14th place, 20:18). Other excellent varsity performances rounding out the top 5 came from Rosalinda Chen ‘22 (24th place, 20:45), Hailey Wilson ‘24 (26th place, 20:50), and Julia Bonk ’24 (36th place, 21:29). The JV squad, led by Veronica Habashy ’22, was the first division 5 finisher in the small school JV race and finished 6th overall, once again topping Mayfield, by a 5-point margin.
The boys team’s top finisher for the varsity squad was Bryan Taniguchi ’23. The freshmen/sophomore boys won their race and were led by the duo of Kevin Martinez ’24 and Evan Guyer ’24. Both teams will race again on October 22 at the Mt. SAC Invitational.
Middle school sports also enjoyed a few recent victories, with flag football besting both High Point and Mayfield Junior to finish their season with a 2-2 record.
