Weekly Sports Roundup: Girls Cross Country Secures League Championship Title!
girls cross country team at league finals

Girls cross country closed out their regular season in extraordinary fashion this weekend at Prep League Finals at Pierce College with League Championships for both the JV and Varsity squads.

The JV girls bested runner-up Chadwick by 42 points. Joyce Kirk ’22 finished first in the race and claimed the title of League Champion with a time of 22:46. Other runners rounding out the top 5 were Jenna Moutes ’25, Nicolle Riley ’24, Sasha Rolfe ’22, and Estee Langbord ’22.

The Varsity girls won on a tiebreak against Chadwick thanks to an incredible performance by 6th place runner Veronica Habashy ’22, who ran a 21:55, which was 1:07 faster than her personal best. Nicole Mirzaian ’22 led the pack, finishing with a time of 20:12 and narrowly outracing a competitor from Westridge in the final 50 meters. Other outstanding races came from Anya Rose ’23, Hailey Wilson ’24, Julia Bonk ’24, and Rosalina Chen ’22. The Varsity team has been crowned League Champions three times in the last five years, with the most recent victory in 2018.

The boys cross country team concluded their regular season at Saturday’s League Finals. The varsity team finished in third place, led by All Conference runners Dominick Schrader ’22, (6th place - 1st team), Bryan Taniguchi ’23 (10th - 2nd team), and Kevin Martinez ’24 (11th - 2nd team). Schrader and Taniguchi both qualified for CIF as individuals, and the team is hoping for an at-large bid to CIF.

The JV squad recaptured the League title in a close race. They finished together as a pack, with Martino Porcu ’22, Carter Sakai ’25, Wyatt Fishman ’23, William Koh ’25, and Miles Craven ’23 all scoring for the team.

Once again, the Wolves put in a great effort at last Friday’s Homecoming game! They posted 31 points but fell short of a victory against Chadwick 31-37. The playoff game will be held Saturday, November 6 at 2:00 p.m. at Thacher School in Ojai, CA.

Today, girls tennis will play in the 1st round CIF playoff against Valencia/Placentia.
