Winter sports are here and we start this week back from Thanksgiving with an update from basketball.

The boys varsity basketball squad spent the past two weeks gaining win after win. During the Cantwell Sacred Heart Tip-Off Classic Tournament games, the team defeated Whitney 61-45, Muir 42-36, Bell Gardens 60-59, finishing 3-1 in 5th place. Henry Morrison ’24 led the team against Whitney, where 10 out of 12 players scored. Christian Baydaline ’22 ripped the ball from opponent Bell Gardens after a rebound and scored a turnaround bank-shot game winner with 0.7 seconds remaining. The team started out this week with another defeat, besting Arleta 66-26 in the John Borroughs Varsity Tournament.

Girls basketball has been quite busy earning victories left and right! At the Mark Keppel Tournament, the squad bested Covina High School 29-27, LA Marshall High 53-46, and LA Marshall High (again) 64-44. The team advanced to the championship game, and though they fell to Saint Paul, the team placed second overall in the tournament.

At the Arcadia Leave-A-Legacy Tournament, the team finished with three losses and one win, which featured exciting buzzer beater activity. Ashley Chea ’23, the top scorer in all games, set a new Prep single game record for scoring and is now tied with Maya Okamoto ’14 for the single game record for most three-point baskets (nine)!

Middle school winter sports teams are wrapping up their regular season play. Boys soccer beat Clairbourn and Rio Hondo before the Thanksgiving break, with great performances by 7th and 8th grade players. Up next, they’ll play the League Tournament on December 7. Girls basketball B team played an incredibly close game against Clairbourn and won 15-12 with an overtime three-pointer by Danielle Walker ’27. Both A and B teams took on Rio Hondo, with a 25-18 win for the A squad. Boys tennis played an excellent match against Mayfield Junior with great performances from doubles pairs, and though they lost by a narrow margin, the girls team were able to best Mayfield Junior. Up next, the teams will play Huntington Middle School on December 1.
