Weekly Sports Roundup: Spring Sports Teams Earn Top League Awards and Advance to CIF Playoffs

GOLF

Prep won the golf match against Chadwick on Tuesday, 200-233 to clinch the Prep League Championship! The team was led by Kaiden Hong ’25, with a 2 under par 36, and Alex Oh ’23, with an even par 36. Their next match is today, April 27, against Poly at Altadena Golf Course. 

  

TRACK AND FIELD

The Wolves competed in Prep League Finals on April 26. Congratulations to the athletes who won medals for finishing third or better in their events (see the full list below). Most of these athletes will be moving on to compete at the CIF Southern Section Prelims on May 7. 

Girls team captain Chase Sullivan ’22 (pictured above left) won the Prep League Most Valuable Field Event Athlete Award for girls track and field! Sullivan placed first in the 200m, 400m, and triple jump and second in long jump at the Finals.

The girls team finished in 2nd place and the boys finished in third 3rd place at League Finals! Congratulations to our Track and Field Wolves.

BOYS TENNIS

The Wolves had a shutout against Duarte on April 20 (18-0), then finished off a sweep of rival Poly winning 11-7. From the jaws of defeat at 1-5, they extended the match to a 6-6 tiebreak facing a match point against them. In the end, the Wolves persevered and played fearlessly to secure a win for the team 7-6 (9-7). Alec Guthrie ’22 (pictured above left) clinched it for the team and was unanimously voted Team MVP! Luca Yeghnazar ’23 and Nico Stanton ’24 won the final doubles of the day in a come-from-behind thrilling win. The team defeated South Pasadena on April 25 with a 15-3 final. The Wolves finish off the regular season this week against Chadwick on April 29.  

  

VOLLEYBALL

Boys volleyball played a great match against La Cañada on April 22. Despite the 1-3 loss, the game scores were 23-25, 34-36 (the longest game Coach Sean Beattie has seen in high school play), 25-20, and 22-25. Though this match was the last of the year, the Wolves are going to CIF Playoffs! Catch them during the first-round match on Thursday, April 28 at 6:00 p.m. at the Prep Gym against Pacifica Christian. BASEBALL

On April 21, the Wolves defeated Chadwick 3-1. Max Brunngraber ’23 pitched the whole game and had 2 RBIs. The team dropped a tough game to Nogales on April 22, 0-1, though Will Koh ’25 pitched a great game, defense played well, the team also hit well. The Wolves have one last League game remaining today against Providence before playoffs.

 

SOFTBALL

The Wolves lost to Chadwick 0-10 on April 20 and lost to Alverno 1-13 on April 21. Last night, the team played Rio Hondo for their Senior Day game, where the Wolves honored Jamie Notley ’22 and Luna Tobar ’22. 

 

SWIMMING 

Congrats to the Wolves on their impressive results from the Prep League finals on Saturday, April 23! Junior varsity boys were League Champions, and the varsity girls and boys teams both won runner-up honors.   

Special recognition to the Varsity League Champions who placed first in the following events:  

  • Athan Boutakidis ’24, 50 freestyle

  • Diego Barraclough ’22, 100 breaststroke

  • Sarah Iturbe ’25, 100 backstroke

  • Natalie Walklett ’25, 100 freestyle

Congrats to the girls and boys swimming teams for runner-up honors at the Prep League Finals on Saturday.
