Weekly Sports Roundup: Girls Swim Wins Historic CIF Championship Title

Addie Gish ’25, Sarah Iturbe ’25, Megan Lee ’25, and Natalie Walklett ’25 clinched the CIF Championship Title for girls swimming.

On Saturday, May 7, the girls' swimming team made history by winning their first ever CIF championship. With only four freshman girls competing in finals, the Wolves won the entire Division 3-SS championships. In the last relay, the team was down by one point, but the Wolves did not disappoint, shares Coach Ingrid Herskind. Led by Addie Gish ’25, Sarah Iturbe ’25, Megan Lee ’25, and Natalie Walklett ’25, Prep dominated the 400 free relay—winning by over 8 seconds.

The following swimmers also qualified for the State Championship:

  • Athan Boutakidis ’24: 50 freestyle
  • Natalie Walklett ’25: 200 freestyle (also CIF winner) and 100 fly
  • Addie Gish ’25: 100 backstroke (CIF winner) and 200 IM
  • 200 free relay and 400 free relay: Gish, Iturbe, Lee, and Walklett (CIF Champions in both events

Several Wolves competed at the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Prelims on May 7. Based on the results of that meet, Chase Sullivan ’22 and Kevin Martinez ’24 will advance to the CIF Finals on May 14!

Sullivan finished sixth in long jump and second in the triple jump. Martinez finished eighth in the 300 meter hurdles.

The Outlook wrote an overview of the girls and boys varsity track and field season, where they highlighted both teams' achievements during the League season.


Update (5/12/22):

Boys varsity tennis defeated Lutheran Orange 14-4 in CIF Semifinals on May 11. Jeremy Sieben '25 clinched our win by defeating their #3 singles and winning the 10th set for Flintridge Prep. Other notable performances today were Christopher Fung '23, Loran Baxter '22, and Cabrera brothers Miles '23 Ray '25 who were undefeated in all their sets. The Wolves will compete in CIF Finals at The Claremont Club at 1:30pm on Friday May 13.

Boys tennis finished the regular season defeating Chadwick 17-1 on April 25. A few days later at the End of League Individual Tournament, the Wolves took first and second place in singles and doubles; Jeremy Sieben ’25 was named the singles champion and Miles ’23 and Ray ’25 Cabrera were named doubles champions.

In the first round of CIF playoffs on May 4, Prep defeated Mark Keppel High School with a blistering 17-1 score. Notable performances came from Will Lanstra ’22, Luca Yeghnazar ’23, and Sieben who were undefeated in their singles matches. The Cabrera brothers, Loran Baxter Mercado ’22 and Matthew Wang ’23, and Neel Sadda ’22 and Leon Liao ’22 were undefeated in their doubles matches.

On the road, the Wolves defeated Foothill Tech 14-4 in CIF Playoffs second round and defeated Oxford Academy in the quarterfinals. The team competes today in the CIF Semifinals against Lutheran/Orange at Scholl Canyon.

The Wolves won their 1st round CIF game against Highland on May 5. Fans cheered as Prep rallied from a 9-7 deficit to a thrilling victory of 10-9, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the visiting Bulldogs. Brian Xu ’25’s single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Spencer Seid ’22 with the winning run. Josh Beserra ’22 went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs with JR Kully ’23 and Seid also driving in two runs. Prep fell during their second-round game against top-seeded Aquinas and finished an incredible season that saw them 10-2 in league and 20-8 overall. 

Congratulations to Prep golfers Kaiden Hong '25, Alex Oh '23, and Henry Brookbanks '23 for finishing 1-2-3 in the Prep League Golf Tournament. Oh successfully defended his League MVP title from last year. All three golfers qualified for the CIF Individual Tournament at Los Robles Greens on May 9.
