June 10 Communication
Our administration has been busy for many weeks in concert with Jim Pickett preparing for the 2020-2021 school year, confident that whatever the future brings, Prep will be ready to deliver the finest education available.
While specific conditions in August are uncertain, Prep’s ability to accommodate effectively is not. Our goal is to be on campus as much as county and medical guidelines allow. We plan to distribute books on Monday, August 24 and begin classes Tuesday, August 25. Athletic programs will be determined in accordance with CIF policy.
We are developing three models that anticipate foreseeable variables, which, if necessary during the year, will allow us to move effectively and quickly from one model to another.
Model One: Based on what we understand at this moment, the most likely scenario is a return to campus with social distancing, fusing on-campus learning with online learning, in which students spend part of their week in classrooms and part in virtual participation. We have measured all campus spaces and have researched health standards including facial covering, enhanced campus cleaning and protocols, air ventilation, food service, passing periods, arrivals, and departures.
Model Two: Health officials have advised us to prepare for a possible return to temporary online learning, with an expansion and refinement of programs developed throughout last spring. Teachers continue their professional growth this summer to explore new platforms and pedagogies. Whether for two weeks or longer, the school knows it can offer a strong virtual experience.
Model Three: Having all students on campus together with athletics and performing arts programs going forward with regular familiarity. This model’s calendar and schedules are fully developed.
While we continue to work out many details, in all cases we will offer a full program with the addition of Mandarin and Chinese Studies. We will also have the added advantage of the new collaboration building, with additional classrooms and meeting rooms, a science lab, art studio, and makerspace.
Jim Pickett assumes the headship on July 1 and will reach out with an update the week of July 6.
Throughout the spring, each person I spoke with stressed the desire for face to face contact, and to get back on campus as soon as it is safe to do so. We continue our work with that goal in mind.
