Introducing Jim Pickett, Head of School
On Wednesday, October 14, alumni and parents were invited to an informal conversation with Prep’s new Head of School, Jim Pickett. Our in-house historian, Mel Malmberg P ’12 ’15, curated a list of fun and informative questions to help us get to know Jim better as he navigates his first year at Prep.
Jim grew up in Maryland, the youngest of three kids, and did most of his schooling there, including earning an MA in geography and a BA in international studies and geography from Towson University. He began to teach at a junior college while he was getting his master’s. He went to Syracuse for a PhD and realized that he wanted to connect more directly with students. His first secondary school teaching job was at the Cranbrook School, a day and boarding school in Michigan, where he also served as assistant director of schools technology, and dean of faculty and supervised a dorm. Before coming to Prep in July, he spent eight years as head of the upper school at Castilleja, an all-girls school in Palo Alto. He is married to Susie Pickett, an educational specialist, and has a daughter, Anna, who is a junior at Mt. Holyoke.
