Friday Sports Roundup: Boys Tennis Makes History, Advances to CIF Finals for First Time
Posted 05/10/2019 03:34PM

The weather is back to feeling like a California winter, just as spring sports are coming to a close.

Tennis has much to celebrate. For the first time in the program history, the boys’ tennis team is headed to CIF finals! The team (11-5) clinched the historic win on Wednesday’s championship match against Bishop Montgomery, unseating the second-seed team to advance to the finals. The Rebels’ doubles team comprised of David Kim and Patrick Hastings boosted the Rebels with their 6-0 win, and the day also saw strong leads from singles players Andrew Megerdichian, Gillis Linde and Derek Tran. The historic win came two days after the Rebels beat out Segerstrom at the quarterfinals match (9-4) that was called due to rain.

This afternoon, tennis is currently competing against No. 1 seed Maranatha at the Claremont Club. Once we have a match update, we’ll add it here. Wishing the guys lots of luck today!

Boys’ volleyball made quite the splash at last Saturday’s quarterfinals, upsetting the No. 1-seeded team from Valley Christian with a major win (29-25, 25-21, 25-16). The Rebels dominated all three games, ending Valley Christian’s hopes of going to semifinals. The game saw incredible performances by seniors AJ Nicassio, Nathan Powell and Luke Stiles, who all brought their A-game to the court. This was the sixth time in the last 12 years that the Rebels advanced to the semifinals.

The team then had a quick turnaround, traveling to Windward School on Wednesday to compete in the semis. The Rebels bared their teeth against the Wildcats, coming out strong early. After playing five incredibly competitive games, the Rebels fell to the Wildcats. Despite the loss, though, the team had an amazing season with seamless teamwork.

While varsity baseball hoped to continue their winning streak in the second round of CIF playoffs, the Rebels were unable to topple Xavier Prep. Pitcher Thomas Kosakowski held the Saints at bay for three and a half innings, but the Rebels faltered after the fourth, and finished 17-9 for the season.

This Saturday and next week, track & field continues their stride into finals and the Masters Meet of Champions. Stay tuned for more updates on the boys and girls squads!
