Detoy Award–Nominations due Friday, April 27
The Detoy Award annually celebrates the accomplishments of a distinguished member of the faculty, administration or staff for outstanding personal and professional contributions to the school. Employees with five years service to the school are eligible. Awardees receive $5,000 and are honored publicly. Recent winners include: Joe Maggio (2017) Raj Wahi (2016), Madeline Barraclough (2015) and Mary Ellen Jamison (2014). Any teacher, administrator, staff member, current parent, student or alumnus may submit a nomination to the Awards Committee. The signed nomination should be at least one full paragraph explaining the unique qualities and contributions of the candidate. All nominations should be considered confidential. Please submit your nomination by April 27, 2018, by emailing your nomination to Peter Bachmann or by dropping it by his office. If you have any questions, please call Margie Woolley at 818.949.5513.

Events for New Families and 2018-2019 Schedule
Online registration is underway for the 2018 Summer Session. Find classes and activities for students in grades 5 through high school and register online today.
All AP test takers will attend a mandatory pre-administration session, where they fill out their candidate packs and preliminary answer sheets to save time on test days. This is scheduled for the week of April 16. Each grade level will have an assigned day and will be receiving a link to sign up for a time slot between 2:40 and 4:00 pm on their designated day. La Mascota 5K Run
Saturday, April 7, the 2nd Annual La Mascota 5K Run hosted by the ACL will be held at Griffith Park, with the race starting at 8:30 am at Crystal Springs Pettigrew Area, 4730 Crystal Springs Drive, LA. The money raised will go to La Mascota Hospital in Nicaragua, the only pediatric cancer hospital in all of Nicaragua. For more information go to https://racewire.com/register.php?id=8487.
Spring Music Concert and Jazz Coffee House
Mark your calendars: Saturday, April 7, is Prep's annual spring music concert. This concert features the Flintridge Singers and Prep's orchestra. The concert begins at 7:00 pm in Norris Auditorium.
On Saturday, April 21, share an evening of jazz, coffee and goodies with Prep's jazz ensembles at the Jazz Coffee House. This performance begins at 7:00 pm in the Miller Theater. Admission to all of the music concerts is free.
Grandparents and Special Friends Day
Grandparents and Special Friends Day is Thursday, April 12, and all 7th-10th grade grandparents and special friends are invited to attend. Continental breakfast begins at 9:30 am, and the day includes classes and lunch with your student, as well as a special performance from Hello, Dolly! No need to RSVP, but if you have questions, Contact Barbara Ealy by email or phone at 818.949.5522. Parking will be available in the Crown Avenue lot.
Note: Juniors and seniors have no classes on Grandparents and Special Friends Day.
Junior/Senior Prom, “Written in the Stars,” will be Friday, April 13 from 7:00-11:00 pm.
ACL Hosts the Special Olympics
Saturday, April 28, the ACL will host the Special Olympics Western Regionals on Prep’s campus, with over 200 athletes competing in aquatics, basketball and first-year flag football. Opening ceremonies begin at 8:30 am. The ACL will be taking all volunteers interested in helping during the day’s event. You can either check in at the Special Olympics booth at 8:00 am or contact Alex Rivera.
Golf Tournament, Silent Auction, Wine Tasting & Dinner
On Monday, April 30, we welcome all parents, faculty and alumni to attend the annual Flintridge Prep Golf Tournament, Silent Auction, Wine Tasting and Dinner. Event proceeds benefit the John Plumb ’64 Endowment Fund for Faculty Enrichment. Teachers use these funds to study an amazing array of topics that advance their teaching. Spring Grade Level Coffees
We hope you can attend the spring coffees. They are a great opportunity to find out what the next year will hold. Parents are invited to attend the coffee for the grade their child will be in next year. All coffees will be in Miller Theater.

On Tuesday, May 1, at 7:00 pm, seniors and parents are invited to Senior Celebration in Norris Auditorium. There will be a reception with light refreshments followed by the pinning ceremony. Seniors, come wearing your college colors!
The Prep Dance Department will present not one, but two performances of the spring dance concert on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5. Both shows start at 7:00 pm, and admission is free.
The Annual Fund is going strong! Thank you to our parents who have already donated. We have not yet achieved our goal of 100% parent participation. Participation is a vital factor that foundations consider when schools pursue grants. We need and appreciate everyone’s support. Athletics News and ACL Updates
Girls soccer had an historic season, winning CIF and advancing to the State Championship, losing in overtime to Our Lady of Peace (San Diego). Girls basketball made it to the CIF Championship, losing to Beverly Hills in the finals. Congratulations to the boys basketball and soccer teams, which also won Prep League titles, and the girls water polo team, which made it to CIF for the first time in 15 years.
Spring sports are ready to flourish once the weather begins to cooperate and the students return from break. Come out and support the Rebel athletes!
The ACL would like to thank everyone who came out February 24 to support the ArcoIris Scholarship Car Wash. We raised $1,100.00, which will help the children of Tipitapa, Nicaragua.
2018-19 ACL applications will be available from April 16-26. Students can pick up an application during lunch or in Mr. Rivera’s office.

College Counseling Corner
This is an exciting time of year! College admission decisions have been released. Our team has begun to feel bittersweet about how far we’ve come with our seniors and excited to see what their futures hold.
Seniors, please carefully read the offer of admission from your college of choice and inform your college counselor of your outcomes. Counselors will begin to schedule meetings with seniors in April to review their options. Once a senior has decided on a college, it is imperative to pay the deposit on time (by May 1). You may only submit an enrollment deposit to one college; submitting a deposit to more than one institution is unethical and may jeopardize admission opportunities at both schools. Seniors who are wait-listed by their first-choice college must see their college counselor by April 15 to outline next steps. Juniors interested in attending the College Essay Writing Boot Camp on June 4 and 5 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Students will receive a registration email shortly.
Juniors and sophomores should register for Subject Tests by May 7 for the June sitting date. We strongly recommend all juniors register for either the April ACT or May SAT if they have not yet tested. Visit www.act.org or www.collegeboard.org to register.
On Tuesday, April 24, at 7:00 pm, all juniors and their parents are invited to attend the annual Case Studies Program at the Westridge School. Prep New Dads Mixer
On Friday, April 6, Bob and Eileen O'Leary will host our annual New Dads Mixer at their residence in South Pasadena. This mixer introduces new incoming dads to the Prep community and shares how the Fathers Club supports the school through volunteering efforts and initiatives. Click here to RSVP. Fathers Club Meeting
On Tuesday, April 17, dads are welcome to join our final Fathers Club meeting of the school year in Prep’s Chandramohan Library.
You will want to save the date for a very interactive and memorable evening.
Be sure to have your senior or alumni children in college check out the Fathers Club Internship Program. This dedicated network of parents and friends are offering many types of internships (short/long, paid/unpaid, local/national) in a huge variety of fields to interested Prep graduates up to five years out of high school. Over 60 alumni have been placed in the program in the last few years, and sponsors report that the Prep grads are among their highest performing interns. This great benefit helps our kids and keeps parents involved–it’s Prep for Life, with benefits!

Susan Stiffelman, MFT, author and parent coach for the Huffington Post, will discuss how parents can maintain connection with their kids, especially as kids pull away and want more independence during the teen years. She’ll also discuss methods and strategies to help kids and parents effectively communicate with each other—focusing on the unique challenges that face this generation of teens due to the sea change in technology and societal pressures to succeed.
Thank you to Michelle Lytle and Annette Starks for getting our judges and students fed before the STEAM and Service Fair, and to Yohanna Chmait and Cathy Brown for assisting with Senior Horizons. Thank you to all of you who participated in the nomination process for the 2018-2019 leadership positions. We were very fortunate to have had more volunteers than slots to be filled. We will publish the list of next year’s Parents Association Leadership Roster in the April PA newsletter.
Please save the date for a Moms Mixer on Friday, April 20 at 6:30 pm. This new event will replace the Spring Luncheon and is designed to be a fun evening for Prep moms to come together socially. We’ll celebrate with good friends, welcome new moms, thank our wonderful volunteers and reveal next year’s benefit theme. Sherry and Andrew Kully have graciously opened their home to host the event.
