Speaker Series

Thank you to all who attended last night’s first Community Speaker Series evening with Vanessa Kellam of Health Connected. Ms. Kellam spoke about teenage sexuality in the digital era. You can access the handouts here and here and the slideshow here. Please note that due to the nature of the discussion, some of the content may not be safe to view at work.

Stay tuned also for Sarah Cooper’s next edition of the Conversations in Education blog, scheduled to release next week, containing a writeup from last night’s Speaker Series.

Athletics News

Athletics

The fall sports teams are winding down, finishing Prep League play and the CIF playoffs. Four of our 6 programs are ranked in the top 10 of CIF. Boys and girls cross country are ranked #2 and are looking to challenge for the CIF title in early November, as well as a top showing at the State meet in Fresno. The volleyball team is ranked #5 and had a season-ending sweep of Chadwick in its League finale. The football team is ranked #9 and is in the hunt for a League championship. Boys water polo is tied for 1st in League and avenged a previous League loss. Girls tennis is fighting hard and constantly improving despite having to face more seasoned teams. Come out and support the Rebels!

Athletic Council on Leadership

On September 28, the ACL hosted a dance on campus and raised over $1,200 for Families Forward in Pasadena, an organization that helps disadvantaged families with children under 5 years old. The ACL would like to thank everyone who came out and supported the fundraiser.

On October 2, the ACL kicked off its tutoring program at the Pasadena Boys & Girls Club. Tutoring days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30 pm. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Alex Rivera for details.

October 18, ACL members will be decorating the Euclid Villa Family Home for Halloween from 3:00-5:00 pm.

Don’t forget to join us for Homecoming on October 26! See the Upcoming Events section above for details.

The ACL would like to invite everyone in the Prep community to be a part of the initiatives throughout the year. If you are interested in supporting or volunteering please contact Alex Rivera, Director of Athletic Initiatives, at (818) 949-5564. ACL news, events, updates and photos can be found here

College Counseling Corner

Seniors

We completed the UC application together on Saturday, September 22 and will continue to provide class time to work on outstanding details. There are four short essays required. The UC and CSU applications should be submitted by Friday, November 26 to allow several days prior to the November 30 deadline. Please have your student print a copy of your application before submitting.

The college counseling internal deadline for essay review (noted on the class syllabus) was Thursday, October 11 (extensions were given to students who have college counseling class later in the schedule). Counselor edits will be returned by Friday, October 26 in the order in which drafts were received. Do not submit your Common Application or UC/CSU applications without having them reviewed in advance by your counselor.

Juniors and Sophomores

An SAT/ACT Information Session will be held on Thursday, December 13 at 7:00 pm in Norris Auditorium. The session will be hosted by our test prep partner, Compass Education Group.

The PSAT was Wednesday, October 10. A practice ACT will be offered at Prep on Saturday, November 10 at 9:00 am, hosted by our other partner, Stepping Stones. An email has been sent with the registration link. Contact Amanda Lem in the College Counseling office at 818.949.5510 with any questions. The goal for both practice exams is to allow counselors to guide juniors in deciding which test suits them best.

For sophomores, taking both practice exams allows students to familiarize themselves with the content and length of the exams.

Fathers Club

Many thanks to the Fathers Club BBQ Co-Chairs, Andrew Son and Alon Friedman, and all volunteers who helped to plan, set up, cook and serve for the Prep Luau Family BBQ! The Fathers Club would also especially like to thank all Prep staff and the Parents Association volunteers who assisted with the BBQ. It was an incredible way to kick off the school year!

Pizza Night

Join us October 25 from 6:30-8:30 pm for a special evening on Flintridge Prep’s Ahmanson Plaza—Suds, Pies & Prep Ties. The event will begin with a craft beer tasting from Frogtown Brewery and pizza from LA Pizzeria Co. Following dinner, a parent panel will share how your kids can get the most out of their Prep experience.

The tasting and meal are free; however, we will need your RSVP by Thursday, October 18. Please register through the link above as soon as possible with your meal order.

Parents Association

Thank you to all our parent volunteers! Christy Billock, Gabby Klatsky and Iris Regn coordinated decorations for the Family BBQ; Rose Cortez and Nada Jones coordinated Picture Day; Annette Story and Millie Paredes coordinated the Back to School Night Faculty Dinner; Rena Lum coordinated the training and logistics of our library volunteers; and Stephanie Kilpatrick, who coordinated the many other volunteers who made these events a success!

Performing Arts

Fall Play

The fall play, WBOO A Halloween Radio Variety Hour, will be a Halloween treat for all. The piece is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between the Drama, Music and Vocal Performance departments. And, with a cast of over 60 talented students and crew, it will be one incredible event! Congrats in advance to all of those involved, and don’t miss out on your four chances to see it:

October 29, 6:00 pm
October 30, 3:00 and 6:00 pm
October 31, 3:00 pm

Auditions for this year's musical Chicago start next week! The campus is buzzing with excitement for this Broadway hit, and now is your chance to get in on it, whether onstage or backstage. Don't miss it!

Happy Homecoming. We hope to see you next weekend!
