Posted 06/13/2017 03:28PM

The Prep Class of 2017 celebrated its final milestones as students. Baccalaureate speaker John C. Reilly, whose son, Leo, is a member of the graduating class, reminded the graduates in a hilarious speech that if they do what they love, they will never work a day in their lives. The emotional Commencement ceremony was capped by talks given by the elected class speaker, Haley Harris, the Benton Trophy winner, Laura Ratliff, and Founders Trophy winner, Elida Kocharian.

The Class of 2017 selected retiring History Department Chair Christine Madsen to receive the class award. Several leadership awards were given, including the Cancer Federation Award for exceptional service (Christian Yeghnazar). The American Legion Award (Lindsay Campbell and Cameron Wu) and the Student Leadership Award (Haley Harris). The Athletes of the Year were Natalie O’Brien and Kendall Kikkawa, while Hanna Barakat received the Tom Fry Award for demonstrating generosity of spirit and love of life.

Families, faculty and staff also gathered to recognize the promotion of 8th graders into high school. The ceremony acknowledged particular 7th and 8th graders who excelled inside and outside the classroom.

Each department awarded honors to standout students, including Athletes of the Year Kate Huntley ’21 and Bennett Oakes ’21. Two students were honored with Outstanding Citizenship Awards for their honor, service and courage—Veronica Habashy ’22 and Madeline Montes ’21. The Pursuit of Excellence Awards, sponsored by the Fathers Club and Parents Association, recognized Leila Wu ’22 and Ryan Alameddine ’21 for their demonstrated enthusiasm for learning.

Eighth Grade President Genevieve Harvey and Board of Trustees Vice Chair David Codiga (father of Hope ’17, Sasha ’17 and Jackson ’15) spoke, encouraging the class to embrace the changes ahead. Families celebrated afterward with a dinner and dance at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club.
